Alice Lorraine (Searl) Varner

August 21, 1922 ~ September 14, 2017 (age 95) 95 Years Old


Alice Lorraine Varner, 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 14, at Price Road Health and Rehabilitation Center in Newark, OH.  Alice was born on August 21, 1922, a daughter of the late Wilbur Searl and Daisy Jackson Mayne.

She was predeceased by husbands George Varner, Harold “Hutch” Hutchinson, and Jack Cabeen, and by two sisters - Ruth Leuby and Carol Musselman. She is also survived by her brother John Searl, Ft. Myers, FL. Alice had six children – Jack Cabeen, San Diego, CA; the late Jill (John) Fowler, Zanesville, OH; Daniel (Susan) Cabeen, Nashport, OH; Diane Smithson, Sebastian, FL; Cynthia (Max) Baker, Newark, OH; and Phillip G. Hutchinson, Zanesville, OH.  In addition to her children, Alice had 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 26 great-great grandchildren, and one Jack Russell terrier named Benny. 

Alice attended Lash High School in Zanesville and worked as a waitress; Hall’s Brown Cow, Windsor’s, Steak ‘n Stein, and Adornettos on Market Street were a few of the eateries where she worked. She was also a Foster Grandmother at Bethesda Hospital, enjoying time spent with the children. Alice was a great cook and showed love to her family through big meals and daily baking.  She liked to read, sew, and was a wonderful letter writer. She spent many summers at Lakeview Recreation Club in Zanesville, basking in the sunshine with her children. On August 19, more than 50 friends and family members celebrated Alice’s life with a 95th birthday party. Family attended the event from California, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Texas.  

Delong-Baker & Lanning Funeral Home in Zanesville will facilitate a cremation in accordance with Alice’s wishes. Private family services will be held at a future date.    

Memorial contributions may be made to Muskingum County Animal Shelter Society, 1430 Newark Road, Zanesville, OH in honor of her pet Benny, a former shelter resident.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Price Road Health and Rehabilitation Center of Newark, OH, the Hospice of Central Ohio, and home care staff from Home Health Care Alliance for their care and support.
